HELPFUL TRAVEL TIPS

Traveling with photo gear can be challenging. This recipe has allowed us to be successful. Be mindful of new airline restrictions also!

For the trip, we are ASSUMING that you are NOT moving around a ton of lighting/strobe crap...e.g. minimalist or outdoor photography...if you're moving over 100lbs of "crap", you are completely on your own (I don't do that nonsense anymore).

For the MotherShip:

  • Camera(s) (duh) This includes BOTH Digital and Film!
  • Lenses, for ALL camera Bodies, whatever you can properly fit for travel
  • Teleconverter units you may need (if any)
  • Lense Hoods (Yes, I forgot them a few times!)
  • On Lense Filters You Expect (and don't expect) to use, UV, ND, Circ Pol, etc...
  • Other Special Effect Lens Filters You May Need
  • Camera Manual(s)...and Quick Guides
  • Spare Camera battery
  • And CHARGE the main camera batter (LOL)
  • Cell Phone
  • Extra Memory Cards (2x what you need)
  • Extra Film (yes, some of us still shoot film!)
  • Extra Lens Cap
  • Extra Lens Cover (Camera end)
  • Extra Camera Body Cap (yes, the one on the camera)
  • Battery Charger (if needed)
  • Batteries for Flash Units
  • Flash Units (multiple?)
  • Small Toolkit: Screwdrivers(s), Pliers, Allen Wrenches, Box Cutter, etc.). Be careful in packing for air travel regulations of course.
  • Spare Towel (never know)
  • Spare Glad Bags (Plastic, sealable)
  • Camera Bubble Level
  • Tripod
  • Ball Mount
  • Quick Release Mounts
  • Gimbel(s) For Tripod
  • Lense Cleaning Cloths (two of them)
  • Accessories (e.g. ladies nylons for the glamour look etc)
  • Remote Triggers (Camera and Flash)
  • Cord Triggers (for Camera)
  • Mobile Backpack (when you leave the mothership)
  • Laptop
  • Compact flash (or whatever) memory reader unit
  • USB to mini-USB cord (if applicable)
  • Portable Camera (yes, not all is 35mm SLR)
  • Portable camera case
  • Portable camera recharger
  • Portable camera extra battery
  • Portable camera extra flash
  • Portable camera case
  • Maps to where you want to go
  • Directions to where you want to go
  • Reservations (air/hotel/car) to where you want to go
  • Rain Gear
  • Plastic covering for camera (for rain)
  • Photography Books/Magazines to read while bored :)
  • Spare cash (currencies, $20+, $1 bills, etc)
  • National or State or Regional Park Passes (If you have them), yes, I've forgotten them a few times :(
  • Reflector Screen(s)
  • Notepad(s)
  • Pen(s)
  • Sharpee(s)
  • Plastic Bags, several sizes, waterproof
  • Flashlight(s)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Water Bottle(s)
  • Camera/Tripod/Whatever manuals and quick ref guides
For the Mobile Excursion:

  • Camera(s) This includes BOTH Digital and Film!! and a SUBSET of your cameras probably
  • Lense (only for what you need to shoot, yes, you have to guess sometimes)
  • Teleconverter unit (pick ONE)
  • Lense Hood (if you can fit them in, otherwise, use your hand!)
  • On Lense Filters You Expect (and don't expect) to use, UV, ND, Circ Pol, etc...
  • Other Special Effect Lens Filters You May Need
  • Cell Phone
  • Extra Memory Cards (2x what you need)
  • Extra Film (yes, some of us still shoot film!)
  • Flash Units (IF you need)
  • Reflector (only for glamour work usually, on site), and pick ONE or TWO reflectors, if you're trekking (max)
  • Camera Bubble Level
  • Tripod (if you can pack it, otherwise, not)
  • Ball Mount (if you can pack it, otherwise, not)
  • Quick Release Mounts (if you can pack it, otherwise, not)
  • Gimbal(s) For Tripod (if you can pack it, otherwise, not)
  • Lense Cleaning Cloths (two of them)
  • Accessories (e.g. ladies nylons for the glamour look etc)
